Scenic Steps and Smiles on the Calver and Froggatt Walk

With a gentle summer breeze and slightly overcast skies, this week’s 3.5-mile Walking Club walk offered beautiful scenery and great company as we explored a circular route around Calver and Froggatt.

We set off through open fields and peaceful woodland, passing the historic Schoolroom at Stocking Farm. This early 19th-century gritstone building, once used to educate the children of mill workers, is now Grade II listed and a lovely reminder of local heritage.

Not far along the route, we spotted a young lamb separated from its flock. The group worked together calmly and kindly to guide it back through a gate. A nearby farmer was grateful for our help – a real feel-good moment that showed the group’s compassion and teamwork.

Approaching Calver Bridge, we encountered a steep stone stairway down to the river. While some carefully navigated the steps, others took the easier ramp kindly pointed out by a local resident – a moment that brought both relief and a giggle. The bridge itself is a Grade II listed structure from around 1800, once part of the old turnpike road.

From there, we climbed steadily through fields, stopping at the top for lunch and to take in the stunning views – green hills, patchwork fields, and even the faint outline of a distant radio mast. With everyone refreshed, we continued through shaded woodland paths lined with ferns.

Along the way, Cayton and Anthony spotted Birch Polypore growing on a tree. They shared its fascinating background as a traditional medicinal fungus once used for dressing wounds and sharpening razors.

As we neared the end of the loop, we passed Curbar Pinfold – a circular stone enclosure once used for holding stray livestock. It offered a charming glimpse into rural life from years gone by.

Back at the minibus, the tired but smiling faces said it all. The day was full of team spirit, beautiful surroundings, and plenty of laughter.

DAIL Score: 8/10 – a great walk enjoyed by all.
