Mid-Year at the Allotment – Still Going Strong

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the year. With the summer solstice behind us, the days are gently starting to shorten, and the big rush to get our main crops in is just about done. It’s felt a bit like a race at times, but the Gardening Club team have really pulled together – and it’s paying off.

But we’re not putting our feet up just yet. Now we’re shifting gears from planting to keeping things tidy and looking good. We want to enjoy the fruits of our labour – and actually be able to see them through the weeds!

The weather looked a bit iffy this morning, but it held out. A gentle breeze, some bright skies, and a team full of determination meant we got stuck in and made great progress.

DLE got cracking on his potato bed – gave it a proper weed and then watered not just his patch but a bit extra too. You can really see the difference all his consistency is making. Those crops are coming on strong.

PH was in the zone, giving his plot a full tidy. It looked fantastic – freshly raked, weed-free, and now home to a neat row of cabbages and some well-placed broccoli seeds. He takes real pride in it, and it shows.

Over in the polytunnel, Louise and DK gave everything a thorough watering and a thorough clean-up. There was a bit of excitement too – Louise spotted and snapped a gorgeous winged visitor!

DK also made progress on his train project. Today it got wheels! Seeing it go from a drawing in his head to something real is inspiring. He’s got plans to add a face and a whistle next, then it’ll be ready for painting.

AW is rising to the pea-growing challenge! After hearing my own plants are struggling, he got stuck into prepping his bed, set up bamboo canes and netting, and planted a fresh batch with care. DLE gave him a hand too – teamwork at its best.

We finished the day feeling tired but proud. Loads got done, and there’s always more to do – but that’s part of what makes it so rewarding.
